This paper addresses some key conceptual and legal issues which arise out of Building Information Modelling (BIM). Although there has been enthusiastic adoption of BIM in Hong Kong, in most projects there is litte clarity on why BIM has been mandated, what BIM means for the various project participants, and what end product has to be delivered as a result. Furthermore, there is little appreciation of how enduring and broad a change BIM may herald for the construction industry, or that BIM is a process that rewards collaborative working styles as well as a technological tool to assist project management.
